Money in Puerto Plata: Cash, Cards, ATMs and Tipping

Plan everyday payments in Puerto Plata: understand pesos, card acceptance, ATM conversion choices, restaurant bills and excursion payment details.

Agree the currency before paying

The Dominican peso is the national currency; DOP and RD$ identify it. A dollar sign alone can leave the currency unclear. If a business offers a US-dollar price, ask whether it accepts that currency, which conversion it uses and in which currency you receive change. Compare the final amount, not an assumed exchange rate. This applies to Puerto Plata city and separate coastal towns such as Sosúa and Cabarete.

Cash and cards solve different needs

Ask the actual business whether it accepts your card network and whether there is a minimum or additional charge. A card terminal somewhere in a resort does not establish acceptance at a beach vendor or driver. Before leaving, check your issuer’s overseas fees, withdrawal rules and contact options. Carry cash for the expenses you have confirmed rather than assuming every stop accepts contactless payment. For a taxi, agree the total fare, currency, passengers, waiting and return before boarding; the transport guide explains the different services.

Read the ATM screen before confirming

Check the withdrawal currency, the operator’s displayed fee and the amount before accepting. Your card issuer may charge separately and set its own limits; a machine’s limit is not your account limit. Shield your PIN, avoid unsolicited assistance and retain the receipt. This guide does not verify individual ATM locations, opening hours, cash stock or a universal withdrawal allowance.

Recognise a currency-conversion offer

A terminal or ATM may offer to bill you in your home currency through dynamic currency conversion, or DCC. Read the offered rate and markup before choosing; selecting local currency leaves conversion to your card arrangements and does not guarantee zero fees. Do not let someone choose for you. If the options or costs are unclear, stop and ask rather than accepting an unfamiliar screen under pressure.

Separate the meal, charges and extra tip

Ask whether menu prices include taxes and service charges, then read the itemised bill before paying. A line labelled propina legal is distinct from an additional voluntary tip; ask what a servicio entry represents instead of assuming every label means the same thing. Clarify any discrepancy with the venue. Use the local dining guide to plan the meal itself. Before adding anything extra, check what has already been charged.

Confirm transport and tour payments in writing

For excursions, confirm who receives payment, deposit and balance, method, receipt and cancellation terms in the complete tour quote. A city-tour itinerary does not automatically include lunch, admissions or personal shopping. Never send your PIN or full card details in an enquiry message.

Prepare for your actual day

List unpaid transport, a meal, confirmed admissions and personal purchases, then arrange payment for those items and a sensible contingency. There is no single cash amount for every visitor. Cruise guests should read the Amber Cove and Taíno Bay comparison: the terminals have different meeting arrangements. Do not assume an ATM will be available before collection. Keep payment essentials dry and unnecessary valuables in secure storage you have arranged.

Everyday payment questions

Can I use US dollars everywhere? No universal acceptance should be assumed. Agree the currency, conversion and change with the individual business before ordering or travelling.

Does paying by card avoid all fees? No. Your issuer’s charges and any accepted conversion or transaction charges depend on the arrangement; check them before confirming.

How much extra should I tip? First check the bill and the agreed inclusions. An additional voluntary tip is your decision; this guide sets no compulsory amount.

Plan the outing and its payments

Review your chosen route and ask for a written quote with currency, payment method and inclusions clearly stated. An enquiry is not a confirmed booking.
